Reduced Medication in Organic Farming with Emphasis on Organic Dairy Production

Medication is an important focus area in organic animal husbandry. The combination of goals relating to improved animal welfare and reduced use of chemicals in general creates a common wish to reduce medication. Based on data from current Danish research projects in organic dairy farming, one specific organic medication pattern or policy cannot be described. The disease treatment pattern is influenced by many factors, e.g. the interaction with colleagues, veterinarians and agricultural advisors. No significant difference could be found with regard to incidence of mastitis treatments or somatic cell counts in 27 organic and 57 conventional herds. A marked tendency to shorter treatment periods in relation to mastitis treatments was described for organic farms in comparison with conventional farms (1.9 days versus 3.2 days (5 organic and 7 conventional herds)). In a study of development of health advisory service in organic herds, the dialogue between farmer, veterinarian and agricultural cattle advisor changed the treatment pattern markedly during a period of 6 months. Among important future challenges for veterinarians in organic farming is pointed at the constructive, open, and critical interaction with the single organic farmer as well as the organic animal husbandry system in general.     

Enhancement of cell growth by intracellularly expressed herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase

A recombinant cell line (NIH3T3:pLtkSN) was made by infecting parental cells (NIH3T3) with a recombinant retrovirus (pLtkSN) encoding herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase (HSVtk) gene. The cells expressing HSVtk (NIH3T3:pLtkSN) grew 2.3 times more than the parental cells (NIH3T3) in Dulbecco's Modified Eagles Media containing 10% (v/v) horse serum. The NIH3T3:pLtkSN cells also showed a significant enhancement in the maximal cell concentration and the specific growth rate even at 2.5% serum concentration. The specific O2 uptake rate of NIH3T3 was 2.1 times greater than that of NIH3T3:pLtkSN. Under both O2-limited and O2-unlimited conditions, it appears that HSVtk plays an important role in enhancing the growth characteristics of animal cells.     

Distinguishing Drift and Selection Empirically: “The Great Snail Debate” of the 1950s

Biologists and philosophers have been extremely pessimistic about the possibility of demonstrating random drift in nature, particularly when it comes to distinguishing random drift from natural selection. However, examination of a historical case – Maxime Lamotte’s study of natural populations of the land snail, Cepaea nemoralis in the 1950s – shows that while some pessimism is warranted, it has been overstated. Indeed, by describing a unique signature for drift and showing that this signature obtained in the populations under study, Lamotte was able to make a good case for a significant role for␣drift. It may be difficult to disentangle the causes of drift and selection acting in a population, but it is not (always) impossible.     

A new species of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Comocladia</Emphasis> (Anacardiaceae) from Belize and Guatemala

Comocladia mayana, a new species of Anacardiaceae, is described, mapped and illustrated. The species is endemic to western Belize and adjacent Guatemala and is restricted to semi-deciduous moist forest on karstic limestone formations. It differs from all other Comocladia species by the combination of entire to subentire, acuminate leaflets and tetramerous staminate flowers.     

Characterization and partial purification of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Candida albicans</Emphasis> Secretory IL-12 Inhibitory Factor

Background  

We have previously shown that supernatant from Candida albicans (CA) culture contains a Secretory Interleukin (IL)-12 Inhibitory Factor (CA-SIIF), which inhibits IL-12 production by human monocytes. However, the effect of CA-SIIF on secretion of other cytokines by monocytes is unknown, and detailed characterization of this factor has not been performed.     

Opportunistic use of camera traps to assess habitat-specific mammal and bird diversity in northcentral Namibia

In northcentral Namibia, Waterberg Plateau Park (WPP) is a protected area that acts as a refuge for rare and endangered species, while the farmlands surrounding the Park are managed for livestock production, but support populations of wildlife for game farming, trophy hunting, and conservation. During June–October 2006, camera-traps were set within and surrounding WPP to assess leopard (Panthera pardus) density (n = 19 camera stations and 946 camera-trap-nights). Fortuitously, photographic results (2,265 photos of identifiable mammal (n = 37) and bird (n = 25) species) allowed us to assess aspects of species diversity and differences among the Park, the farmland areas along the Waterberg Plateau escarpment, and the flatlands surrounding the escarpment. Species composition among the three areas was markedly different, and made sense with respect to differences in habitat and management features. Camera-trapping efforts, although intended for a narrow purpose, may also provide a rather robust record of differences in mammal and bird diversity in adjacent habitats and can be incorporated into long-term monitoring programs.     

Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) sequence conjugated in a synthetic copolymer bearing a sugar moiety for improved culture of parenchymal cells (hepatocytes)

A copolymer, including a Gly-Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser (GRGDS) sequence and sugar moieties, was synthesized for the culturing of parenchymal cells (hepatocytes). Hepatocyte cells attached to poly[N-p-vinylbenzyl-d-maltonamide-co-6-(p-vinylbenzamido)-hexanoic acid-GRGDS] [poly(VMA-co-VBRGD)]-coated dishes grew approximately 60% better than on other polymer-coated surface for 12 h. Also, about 80% greater albumin secretion (0.38 pg ml^–1) and about 70% greater urea synthesis (0.495 pg ml^–1) from hepatocytes were produced in this matrix as compared with unstimulated cells. The behaviour of hepatocytes on poly(VMA-co-VBGRGDS)-coated dishes was not distinct from those attached to a collagen. The conjugation of the adhesion molecules of the RGD peptide in the poly(VMA-co-VBGRGDS) copolymer therefore specifically interacts with integrin families on the hepatocyte cell membrane.     

Ecology of Hantaan virus at Twin Bridges Training Area,Gyeonggi Province,Republic of Korea, 2005–2007

The Twin Bridges Training Area (TBTA) in the Republic of Korea consists of dirt roads, barren training areas, and forested hillsides adjacent to linear and broad expanses of tall grasses, herbaceous, and scrub vegetation. Of the six species of small mammals, the striped field mouse, Apodemus agrarius, was the most frequently captured (96.1%). Apodemus agrarius capture rates varied from 17.7 to 33.2% during three trapping periods. Gravid females were observed during November‐December 2006 (8.4%) and March 2007 (5.1%). In 2005, the overall seroprevalence of Hantaan virus (HTNV) was high (34.4%) and lower during surveys in 2006 (14.2%) and 2007 (13.8%). Seroprevalence was directly correlated with weight increase of A. agrarius.
